Sometimes you just have to satisfy a craving… and empty the fridge of the last three apples.
I didn’t really feel like digging out a recipe… I was too focused on the final product! So, I rather made it up as i went along. Since I didn’t measure, I am guessing at each of these quantities, but the ratio is right. =)
Here’s the recipe:
FILLING
- 3-4 Braeburn (or similar) apples, peeled, sliced into 1/4″ thick slices
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 2-3 Tablespoons lemon juice
- 3 Tablespoons to 1/4 c. white sugar or turbinado sugar (to taste)
- 2 Tablespoons to 1/4 c. brown sugar (to taste)
- 2 Tablespoons (more or less) GF Flour mix – depending on juiciness of the apples
CRISP TOPPING
- 6 Tablespoons butter, slightly softened
- 1/3 c. GF quick oats, roughly ground almonds & walnuts, or quinoa flakes
- 1/4 c. GF Flour mix
- 2-3 Tablespoons white sugar (to taste)
- 1-2 Tablespoons brown sugar (to taste)
- optional: ground cinnamon (1 tsp) and freshly ground nutmeg (1 tsp)
INSTRUCTIONS
- Preheat oven to 375*F.
- Peel and slice apples into thin slices (1/4″).
- Put into a medium bowl and sprinkle with lemon juice. Mix.
- Add sugars, flour and cinnamon.
- Mix together very well.
- Pour into medium (for thin) or small (for deep) baking dish.
- Put softened butter into the same bowl where you mixed the apples.
- Add oats (or other option), flour and sugars and “squish” together well until crumbly.
- Pour and crumble over apples in baking dish evenly.
- Bake for 23-30 minutes.
Cool slightly before serving (5-10 minutes).
Serve over all natural GF vanilla ice cream.
I made 2 of these crisps last night. I made a grannie smith apple crisp following the recipe except for the lemon juice………I would like it more with about 1/2 of the cinnamon. GF Oats for the topping
Grannie Smith made for a TART crisp
The 2nd one that I made for my hubby, I used the ApplePears from Publix with 1/2 of the cinnamon and quinoa for the topping and it was wonderful
ApplePears make for a sweet crisp
Thanks for sharing the recipe!
Awesome! Those are great tips, Linda. Thanks! I knew the crisp wasn’t overly sweet… tart/sweet… I’m glad you have given great ideas to make it even sweeter for people who like that! Thanks for sharing! -Kate
As a mother to a gluten free munchkin, I can’t tell you how your recipe brings little twinkles on my daughter’ eyes. I stumbled upon your site just last week and I’ve made 2 batches of apple crisps based on your recipe. We even couldn’t tell if it’s in fact gluten free. It’s now one of our fave comfort foods.
I did change your recipe a bit as my daughter has multiple food allergies. I substituted oats with gf cornflakes. It still turned out temptingly yummy.
Thank you for sharing this recipe and I’ll definitely stop by here often.

ps. Oh, We did try your rice spring rolls recipe. My daughter loved those rolls! (Well, she preferred to eat the rice papers than the fillings) ^_^
Welcome! I’m glad the crisp recipe works well for you too. The idea of cornflakes intrigues me. GF corn flakes are one of my favorite ice cream toppers! I know – but it’s true! They add such a great crunchy texture that I LOVE it! (I think I actually eat the ice cream because I love that crunchy texture with the sweet creamy ice cream. 🙂 -Kate
try the corn flaked with some honey and cinnomon if you really want a treat. I love a real vanilla ice cream with bits of ground vinilla.
hmm GF corn-flakes as the ice cream topping .. we need to try that next time … thanks for the idea Kate!
heh heh – LOL – I’m good at the ice cream toppings =) -Kate
Try G-Free pretzals in Peanutbutter icecream, sweet+ salty…YUMMM!
I love this apple crisp, make it all the time!!
I mentioned it and you on my blog I hope that’s ok.
Love this. I made this last night and we were all so very happy with the results.
Thank you for an easy, delicious recipe.

i was just diagnost with celiac desses b4 christmas and would realy like to make this but not sure what kinf of g-free floure to use..should i use rice flour?
Sabrina –
Welcome to the GF World! Trust me, I know everything seems overwhelming right now, but it DOES get easier.
You can’t replace regular gluten flour with just rice flour, but rather a blend of flours. The GF Mix that I use is great for quick breads, cookies and muffins. You DO , however, have to have special blends to make regular gluten-free breads. Check out the recipes on my site/blog and the several other phenomenal gluten free blogs that I have links to (and there are so many more too!) The beauty of our online community is the willingness of everyone to share ideas with each other. It is COMPLETELY what saves us all – especially in the beginning! Just say the word, Sabrina – and someone will jump in with help!

this is SO delicious, thanks for sharing, I used the oats and put only half the butter and it’s still delicious! this recipe is a keeper, thanks so much!
OH.. THANK YOU for this recipe. I am making RIGHT NOW! I have hundreds of apples and I am “gluten free”. Found this on the web, and I am waiting anxiously for it to finish cooking. Again, thanks for sharing.

Hi there! Could I link to this recipe from my blog about ADHD? 🙂
I just started the blog a few months ago and I have been sharing some of what has worked for my family, over the past 9 years. Diet played a huge role for us (especially dairy-free and no preservatives and colouring) and though we haven’t gone gluten-free (yet), I would like to include a few options for those who are interested.
My ADHD blog is http://addriftnomore.wordpress.com
Have a look and let me know if I can link to you, for your apple crisp (which sounds yummy!)
Thanks! 🙂
of course! Link away. 🙂
I just discovered your wonderful blog. Please check mine out at tamisrenteria.wordpress.com where I blog about a gluten free, stay-at-home recipe journey around the world. I’m definitely going to use your recipe for apple crisp, although right now I’m trying to figure out where to find gf oats.

Hi! what did you use as your gr flour mix?
I use this basic mix which you can find on my site here:
thanks for a wonderful recipe. i tried it a week ago and they were really great with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
I am really new to the world of gluten free and I was wondering if you used quinoa as the topping would you cook it first?
Hmmm..quinoa is a nutty protein…not sure I would use that for a crisp topping but if I did I would DEFINITELY cook it.:)
